Saint-Tropez

A city to defend

Like any port city, Saint-Tropez is a frontier that must be defended. From the sea, the enemy can appear! Discover the remains of the village’s defensive heritage from the mid-15th to the early 17th century.

Firstly, history buffs will be delighted to visit the Citadel of Saint-Tropez, a masterpiece of early 17th-century military architecture. It belongs to the period known as ‘pre-Vauban’, named after the famous military engineer who left his mark on this era. Its function was to protect the town from maritime invasions.

The citadel’s keep, an imposing hexagonal structure, has been listed as a historic monument since 1921. The ramparts and walls, which bear witness to remarkable defensive ingenuity, have been listed since 1995.
